Worcester has an amazing history of economic success. Back when the city was first settled, textiles, shoes, and clothing were some of the first industries that were prominent to the city. As the city grew, more manufacturing facilities were built and helped to develop Worcester into a manufacturing center where they began to mass-produce wire and machinery.
During this time there were a number of miraculous achievements and inventions that were made. One of the first was by George Fuller who was an inventor and philanthropist. He developed a heat-treating process that is absolutely crucial to developing steel. This process is strong enough to be used in train couplings and some of the first automobile crankshafts. His company, Wyman-Gordon has been a leading manufacturer of machine parts ever since.
Modern day Worcester has a much more diverse economy with the leading employer being the University of Massachusetts Medical School. The biotech park that is right beside the university has a number of innovative companies, such as Advanced Cell Technology, which focuses on the development of methods to create replacement cells for stem cells.
While medical facilities seem to be taking a new lead in Worcester's economic growth, Worcester still has a large manufacturing business as well. Morgan Construction is a manufacturer of steel rolling mills that has their headquarters located in Worcester. Wright Line is a manufacturer of consoles and other workstations for the 911 and other emergency operation centers. Some other, older, businesses include Saint-Gobain, Norton Abrasives and Polar Beverages.
Worcester also has a financial sector where you can find businesses like Hanover Insurance, the Paul Revere Life Insurance Company, and the oldest insurance company in Massachusettes: Harleysville Worcester Insurance Company.
Worcester is home to the famous 'That's Entertainment' comic book and collectibles store that was one of the three comic book stores worldwide that won a "Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award" from Comic-Con International: San Deiego.
Regardless of whether you need a job in manufacturing or retail, Worcester has something to offer everyone in every zip area.
